Why Book Covers Get an ‘Indian’ Makeover

Glance through the covers of Indian novels published in India and their overseas editions online, and a few patterns keep cropping up.

The overseas editions—in many cases—are likely to run through a few quintessential Indian motifs, like bright saris, piles of Holi colors, holy men, one of a series of animals (elephant, monkey, camel) or gods, while Indian editions are often more likely to be more abstract or muted.
One of the most striking examples of this is the novel “Serious Men,” which is on the shortlist for the Man Asian Literary Prize, the winner of which will be announced on Thursday. The book had three very different covers in India, the United Kingdom and the United States.
